I grew up as the eldest of four (with three younger sisters) in a rowdy Catholic family in Hampshire.
My father, grandfather, and uncle were all keen amateur photographers. On holiday, they would take photographs of landscapes (usually majestic scenes of mountains they had hiked up) and show them on slideshows in my grandparents attic.
Later, my Dad taught me to develop and print photographs in my bedroom, with blacked-out windows. We had photography books at home, and I was particularly fond of 'Worlds in a Small Room' by Irving Penn, who made gentle but memorable portraits of people in a portable studio.
I loved skate magazines like Sidewalk and Kingpin, and started taking photographs of my friends at the skate park. It was around this time that I decided to become a photographer.
At Falmouth, I got an old-fashioned art school education. My lecturer told me, "If you ever get tear-gassed, don't rub your eyes." This seemed like good advice, but I've yet to test it.
After Uni, I began to assist commercial photographers in London, and dabbled in every area of the industry, until I settled on the mix of portraiture and documentary that makes up my work today.
Still based in London, I split my time between commissioned work, and my own photography practice, which you can see in the galleries 'Leegate' and 'Belt & Braces'.
